The Midday Review
Don Kapetanakis, CMT

Don Kapetanakis, affectionately known as The Kaptain, was first exposed to technical analysis in the mid-80s, while earning his undergraduate degree from McGill University in Montreal. Working toward his Bachelor of Science and sorely seeking an occasional diversion from science-overload, he found his thrills in trading commodities from a small account and quickly discovered that the only way to reliably make heads or tails of the commodities markets was through charting. Technical analysis soon became his passion, becoming self-taught in the discipline and developing technical trading systems to trade commodities. In 1990 and about to earn his Graduate Diploma in Applied Business Management, Don accepted a position on the US equity block desk of UBS Securities in New York as a technical analyst under Joe Generalis. In 1992, he accepted a position at the prominent hedge fund of Odyssey Partners as a technical analyst. As Odyssey closed down most of their operations in 1997, Don accepted a position as a senior technical analyst at Merrill Lynch Research under Dick McCabe. His proficiency in shorter term trading tactics got him a seat on Merrill’s US equity desk as the desk’s technician in 2003. Away from research restrictions, Don was able to broaden his universe of potential trading recommendations and was able to offer trading clients and Merrill’s traders more effective, real-time, money-making ideas. In the latest evolution of his career, Don Kapetanakis is broadening his reach and the accessibility to his work, yet again, with the establishment of DKTechnicals.
